Solid objects!

Here are some drawings showing examples of solid things...

And then we began sorting things according to color...

It can be very tricky to sort things that roll!

Hmm..should we call the cork and hair pin brown?

There are many names for the color or "non-color" of an acrylic cube, cylinder and plastic lid: Glass-color, see-through, clear and transparent. Which one do you prefer?

We also sorted the objects according to shape!

We have talked about our different ways of sorting, and also learnt new words for 3D objects like "cube", "sphere", and "cylinder".

News week 16, 15th – 19th of April 2013

Hi there! This week, we had no Alphabet Corner because on Monday the dental hygienist came to talk to the class about taking care of our teeth.

She talked about animals who have teeth and those who do not. She told us what teeth were for. Of course there was a long discussion about what kind of food one has to be careful to eat. But most important of all, she explained how to brush your teeth to keep them healthy. The children had a lot to say about teeth and even about wearing braces! They wrote about how many teeth they had dropped in their Newsbooks.

Some were not happy with the color of their brush..

On Tuesday, we worked the whole day in half class with one half of the group doing math books and the other half doing a clay painting project with Robson. That worked out quite well.
On Thursday, we also worked the whole day in half class with half of the group continuing to work with the Science project. This week, the discussion was around “what objects are solid objects?” This was a chance for those who had missed out on the science project to catch up on what we have been doing so far.

Today Friday, we worked on an art project: “What do you see through your window?” It was creative and inspiring.  We have also been doing some singing so the children might be humming a song they learnt for a while.

Next Week : week 17
·         Monday 22nd of April: Letter “Y”. remember to give your child something for the Alphabet Corner!
·         Thursday 25th. School has the monthly staff meeting so please try to pick your children up by 15.45

We want to encourage the whole class to register to participate in the minimarathon. This is a wonderful event which is very well organised which will take place on Saturday the 2nd of June. Maybe you can register as a class? For instance team : Fe-Johannes skola?  and eventually think of meeting somewhere for a picnic afterwards? It is a very pleasant day (if it does not rain) Here in school, we will try to organise regular practice for the mini marathon . You can look at the official website for more info : www.minimaran.se

Have a great weekend!!

Science!

Here are some pictures from our first lesson with our science project!

20 solid objects in each tray!

We test the properties of the steel ball and plastic spoon. How are they different? How are they alike?

"The ball can spin, can the spoon spin?"

"Yes! The spoon can spin too. "
"But, the ball spins longer."

"The steel ball is heavier than the plastic spoon."

"The steel ball is hard, you can't brake it."

"You could brake the spoon."

Stella's drawing of the tray with 20 objects!

Experiments...

Next week we continue with more testing and observations and fun!

News week 15

Welcome back...

...from your Easter break.

The kids have been eager to get back to work, so we have!
Our Alphabet corner is now filled with x-words, axe, the Lorax, flexi-tracks, fox, x-ray, box, Alexander, T-rex and an exam!

We are completing the drawings of the months and a cover in order to produce a small book with them all.

Our science project “solids and liquids” has begun! It will carry on for several weeks this spring. We will be investigating properties of different solid objects (and later liquids), approximately twice a week in half class groups. The groups are called “the sun” and “the moon”. When one group is working with science, the other group will be working with Robson.

They were really into the work and good at putting words to their thoughts.

Our outing to the theater on Thursday was another exciting part of our week.
And it went really well!

The children enjoyed the play “Snäll” and had a good time in the park afterwards.

We had a really interesting discussion about the play when we were back in the classroom again.

A very exciting part of this wek was to recieve a secret friend
Next week we will see if we figure out who it was....
